Extracurricular Work — An Doras

An Doras

This Irish-language journal, published by the Chicago-based organization Na Gaeil, started as a double-sided 11" x 17" broadsheet in May 1996. It was originally funded by a $2000 mini-grant from the Illinois Humanities Council (IHC), for which I drafted the program proposal.

After the first issue, the format was increased to a 16" x 22" sheet. Each issue included original cover art and functioned as a self-mailer (folding down to 5.5" x 11"). Production of the print edition ended in Fall 1999.

Illustrated Poem, "Tír Bhláthanna na Gréine"
(The Land of Sunflowers)

I'm not a trained illustrator, but I have always enjoyed drawing and sketching. This work was originally published in the debut issue of  An Doras.

Tá an dán seo scríofa as Gaeilge. Más maith leat an téacs a léamh, nó leagan níos mó a fheiceáil, téigh anseo. (This poem is written in Irish. If you would like to read the text, or see an enlarged version, click here.)

I see a fairy road when I close my eyes / where my car falls into a magic slumber, near a field of sundrenched grass / I sit and wait... / hoping for a little silver boat that would break the bright yellow horizon / listening for a heedless gust of wind that would bear me west over the farmers' houses / amidst the lazy ditchweed... / a complete drunken changeling... / ...in Kansas.
